Mechanical Finishes

Surface preparation and texturing โ€” often combined with chemical coatings for the best result.

Bead Blasting

Ra 1.6โ€“6.3 ฮผm

Uniform matte satin finish. Removes tool marks and creates consistent texture. Glass bead or aluminum oxide media. Common pre-treatment before anodizing.

Tumbling / Vibratory

Ra 0.4โ€“1.6 ฮผm

Deburrs edges, smooths surfaces, and blends parting lines. Ceramic, plastic, or steel media. Ideal for high-volume small parts.

Brushing

Ra 0.3โ€“1.2 ฮผm

Linear grain pattern for an industrial-modern look. Scotch-Brite or abrasive belt. Common on stainless steel and aluminum panels.

Polishing / Mirror

Ra 0.05โ€“0.2 ฮผm

Progressive buffing to achieve a mirror finish. Available from #4 satin to #8 mirror on stainless. On aluminum, requires anodizing to maintain.

Sandblasting

Ra 3.2โ€“12.5 ฮผm

Aggressive texturing for industrial applications. Sand or garnet media. Creates excellent paint and coating adhesion.

Lapping / Honing

Ra 0.01โ€“0.1 ฮผm

Precision flatness and surface finish for mating surfaces, sealing faces, and optical components.

Plastic Part Finishing

Surface treatments and decoration for injection molded and 3D-printed parts.

Painting / Spray Coating

Primer + topcoat + clearcoat systems. UV-resistant formulations for outdoor use. Soft-touch, rubber-feel, and metallic finishes available.

Texture (Mold Texturing)

EDM, chemical etch, or laser texturing applied to the mold cavity. VDI, MT, SPI standards. Permanent โ€” no secondary operation needed.

Pad Printing

Transfer ink from etched plate to part surface. Ideal for logos, markings, and multicolor graphics on curved surfaces.

Silk Screening

Push ink through patterned mesh onto flat or near-flat surfaces. Cost-effective for high-volume single/dual-color printing.

Laser Engraving

Permanent marking for serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes, and logos. No consumables โ€” never fades or wears off.

Chrome Plating on Plastic

Decorative chrome finish on ABS or ABS/PC parts. Includes copper + nickel + chrome layers. Used in automotive trim and consumer electronics.

In-Mold Decoration (IMD)

Pre-printed film placed in mold before injection. Creates scratch-resistant, high-detail graphics fused into the part surface.

Ultrasonic Welding

Join plastic components without adhesives or fasteners. Clean, strong bonds for electronic housings and medical devices.

Surface Finishing FAQ

What surface finishes do you offer?
We offer 30+ finishing options including anodizing (Type II and III), powder coating, wet painting, electroplating (zinc, nickel, chrome, copper), e-coating, hot-dip galvanizing, passivation, black oxide, brushing, polishing, bead blasting, tumbling, and specialty coatings like PTFE and ceramic.
Can you color-match finishes to Pantone or RAL?
Yes. Powder coating supports all RAL colors and we can match Pantone references. Wet painting supports any custom color with color matching to your sample or specification. We provide sprayout samples for approval before production.
What is hard anodizing (Type III) vs standard anodizing?
Standard anodizing (Type II) creates a 5โ€“25ฮผm oxide layer for corrosion resistance and color. Hard anodizing (Type III) produces a 25โ€“75ฮผm layer with significantly higher hardness (60โ€“70 HRC equivalent) and wear resistance โ€” ideal for aerospace and military parts.
How do you ensure coating quality?
Coating thickness is measured with calibrated gauges per ASTM standards. Salt spray tests (ASTM B117) verify corrosion resistance โ€” we offer 24h to 1000+ hours depending on specification. Adhesion is tested per ASTM D3359 cross-hatch. Full test reports included.
Can parts be finished with multiple coatings?
Yes. Common multi-layer finishes include zinc plating + clear chromate, primer + topcoat painting, and nickel + chrome plating. We also do selective masking for areas that need to stay uncoated (bearing surfaces, threaded holes, mating faces).
What's the cost of finishing?
Finishing typically adds 10โ€“30% to base part cost. Bead blasting and tumbling are cheapest ($0.10โ€“0.50/part). Powder coating runs $0.50โ€“3/part. Anodizing $1โ€“5/part. Chrome plating is highest at $3โ€“15/part. All significantly cheaper than US finishing shops.
How do I choose the right finish?
Consider: environment exposure (indoor/outdoor/marine), required hardness, cosmetic requirements, conductivity needs, and budget. Our engineers provide free finishing recommendations with every quote. Send us your requirements and we'll suggest the best option.
Do you handle finishing in-house or outsource it?
Many of our factories have in-house anodizing, powder coating, and plating lines. For specialty finishes we use dedicated finishing partners within our audited network. Either way, we manage the entire process and quality control under one PO.
