Why Forging? The Metallurgical Case
If your parts see cyclic loads, impact, or vibration โ and you're machining them from bar stock โ you're likely paying 3โ5ร more than necessary. Forging produces aligned grain flow that delivers real structural advantages.
+20โ30% Fatigue Strength
Forging aligns grain flow with part geometry. The result: 20โ30% higher fatigue strength vs equivalent machined or cast parts โ without using a higher-alloy material.
Less Material Waste
Machining from bar stock wastes 50โ80% of the raw material. Closed-die forging produces near-net shapes โ 20โ40% material utilization improvement means significant raw material cost savings at volume.
Consistent Internal Quality
Forgings are free of the porosity, shrinkage voids, and segregation that affect castings. Every piece has the same grain structure โ critical for fatigue-sensitive applications in automotive, powertrain, and structural parts.

Forging vs. Casting vs. Machining
Not sure if forging is right for your part? Here's how it stacks up against the alternatives.
| Factor | Forging | Die Casting | Machining from Bar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | โ Highest โ aligned grain flow | Good โ porosity can limit fatigue | Good โ depends on bar grain direction |
| Internal Defects | โ None โ solid metal, no voids | โ ๏ธ Porosity risk (HPDC) | โ Good if bar is clean |
| Best Volume | 500โ500K+ pcs | 500โ1M+ pcs | 1โ10K pcs |
| Tooling Cost | $2Kโ$40K | $3Kโ$25K | โ $0 (no tooling) |
| Material Waste | โ Low (near-net shape) | โ Very low | โ High (50โ80% waste) |
| Geometry Complexity | Moderate โ requires draft angles | โ High โ thin walls possible | โ Very high โ 5-axis capable |
| Weight Range | โ Widest (50gโ500kg) | 10gโ15kg typical | Any (machining time = cost) |

Forging FAQ
What forging processes do you offer?
Hot forging (open-die and closed-die), cold forging, warm forging, impression die forging, and precision net-shape forging. Our Vietnam factories also offer roll forging for shafts, drop forging for high-volume parts, and isothermal forging for titanium and nickel alloys.
What materials can you forge?
Carbon steels (1018, 1045, 1060), alloy steels (4140, 4340, 8620, H13), stainless steels (304, 316, 17-4PH, 15-5PH), aluminum alloys (2024, 6061, 7075), titanium (Grade 2, Grade 5/Ti-6Al-4V), copper alloys, and nickel superalloys for high-temp applications.
What tolerances can Vietnam forging factories achieve?
As-forged hot forgings: ยฑ0.5โ1.5mm per DIN 7526 Grade F. Precision closed-die forgings: ยฑ0.2โ0.5mm. Cold forgings: ยฑ0.05โ0.15mm, often eliminating post-machining. For tight-tolerance features, post-forging CNC machining achieves ยฑ0.01mm and better.
How do Section 301 tariffs affect forged parts from China vs Vietnam?
Most forged steel parts (HTS 7326, 8484, 8483) face 7.5โ25% Section 301 tariffs from China. Aluminum forgings (HTS 7616) face an additional 10% aluminum Section 232 tariff on top of Section 301. Vietnam-origin forgings pay 0% Section 301 โ typically saving $30โ200K+ per year for mid-size procurement programs.
What part sizes and weights can you forge?
Our network covers parts from a few grams (cold forged fasteners, pins) up to 500kg (large open-die forgings, flanges, rings). Closed-die forging: typical range 0.1โ50kg. Open-die forging: up to 500kg per piece, lengths to 3m.
Do you offer post-forging machining and heat treatment?
Yes. Most of our forging factories include in-house heat treatment (annealing, normalizing, quenching & tempering, case hardening) and CNC machining for critical features. We also coordinate shot blasting, NDT inspection (UT, MP, PT), and surface treatments โ coordinated through a single factory or managed split between partners.
What are typical lead times and MOQs for forging projects?
New die development: 4โ8 weeks. First articles: 2โ4 weeks after dies approved. Production runs: 3โ6 weeks depending on complexity. MOQ: 200โ500 pieces for new closed-die projects to amortize tooling. Open-die and rolled ring: no practical MOQ. Tooling cost: $2,000โ$40,000 depending on die complexity.
What certifications do your Vietnam forging factories hold?
ISO 9001:2015 is standard across our forging network. Automotive-spec factories hold IATF 16949. Aerospace-applicable factories can support AS9100D-adjacent documentation. For each project, we provide the factory's certificate stack, press maintenance records, heat treatment calibration certs, and NDT inspector qualifications.
